The takeaway from WHITEY is an obvious but important one: the United States Government is willing to collaborate with criminals and butchers to achieve strategic objectives. In this case taking out the Boston area Cosa Nostra. We do it overseas -- working with the rich Gulf emirates who at the same time fund global jihad -- so why not at home? Whitey Bulger was mid-level tough Irish muscle before being made a king by the FBI. Our tax dollars hard at work.

I couldn't even finish this, beyond annoying and riddled with so much "he said, she said" nonsense. This felt less like a documentary, and more like an opportunity to play the blame game. He says this, government says that, way too all over the place. I still don't understand who is more guilty. Skip this, maybe the newer version of his movie will be better.

this is one of those pathetic movies where everyone wants to blame the government. whitey admitted to murder and other assorted crimes but he wants to blame the government. Is it really the government or individuals in the government who go bad? bulger is where he belongs and he gets off easy

Even if this had been a 4 hour movie it probably couldn't have given me a clear understanding of who did what and/or who was responsible. It was just an endless parade of people lying to one extent or another to protect themselves. That is one jury that I wouldn't have wanted to be any part of.

I do not see how anyone was convicted in this case. Perhaps, if I read the court transcripts myself, because this film was all over the place. This man seems to only have become notorious after he was captured, before then, how many people actually heard of Bulger? The comments from the victims families, who it seems were involved in or with criminals, cops, FBI, everyone claims innocence. Maybe that is the way it seems because the film is rather muddled. Perhaps the Hollywood version will be more entertaining.

Great.

How this was arranged, in my opinion, was horrible. If you can eventually put the "facts" together, it is still confusing.

I thought this was fascinating. I went into it knowing a little bit about Bulger, fully expecting to see a film about an organized crime boss and the atrocities he committed. What I did not expect was to see how he was enabled and protected by the FBI and other policing forces. This film is not really the story of Whitey Bulger but the story of government corruption. If you like Boardwalk Empire you will enjoy this film.

Generally, when a film is endorsed (see dvd case) by numerous film festivals, there's a pretty good chance it'll be worth watching. Not this time. It lagged and dragged it's way through whatever story it was attempting to tell. I think some narrative would have been a wiser choice. As is, there's not a lot of cohesion here and while many may have heard the name Whitey Bulger, a bit of background to lay the foundation is essential. A real disappointment.
