The hottest summer of the twentieth century. A tiny community of five houses in the middle of wheat fields. While the adults shelter indoors, six children venture out on their bikes across the scorched, deserted countryside. In the midst of that sea of golden wheat, nine-year-old Michele Amitrano discovers a secret so momentous, so terrible, that he dare not tell anyone about it. To come to terms with what he finds, he will have to draw strength from his own imagination and sense of humanity. The reader witnesses a dual story: the one that is seen through Michele's eyes, and the tragedy involving the adults of this isolated hamlet. The result is an immensely powerful, lyrical and skilfully narrated novel, reminiscent of Stephen King's Stand By Me.

This one was gripping from the start. The main character was trustworthy, considerate. I liked him at the helm. The secondary characters had legs too. I'm Not Scared about finding out dark truths about family and the darkness that humans are capable of. Combine the two and there's this coming-of-age story. It's a translated book and it was well done because it read seamlessly, as if it had been originally written in English.

It's not a long book so I read it fast and it was disappointing to have the experience come to an end. I searched for a sequel but there isn't one, which is probably for best. I did find that the book was made into a movie (2004) but the library doesn't have it. BOO. I will submit a request to SPL to order a copy.

I personally loved this book! so interesting and sad. a book about torture to a youth and how another youth becomes friends with him, when he has greater connections to the child then he thought! The translation seemed a little off though but was still amazing.

A good story about a boy's loss of innocence in rural Italy. This novella is based on a true story.
