An Australian film that preaches the age-old adage that two wrongs don't make a right. Robin Wright and Naomi Watts play two lifelong best friends. They only grow closer when one's husband dies and the other's husband plunges headlong into his work. Together they raise each of their sons in a quaint and quiet seaside town. Their relationship is beautiful and strong, but when one son takes a fancy to his mother's best friend, the whole dynamic shifts and swiftly begins to crumble. Not to be crude, but AMOUR takes the concept of a MILF to a new level. Every connection is strained, some people's hearts getting wounded in the mix. The sons grow more confident in their conquests and the mothers can't seem to resist the attention, flattered by these young studs seeking them out. It's a confusing and emotionally complex web they weave, damaging each other in the process. Unfortunately none of it feels important after the inciting incident occurs; the trysts begin and the story falls apart, dragging its remnants behind it. Plus, for many, the warped romance here may feel, for lack of a better word, icky. As interesting a premise they began with, AMOUR scuttles along the surface, only really dealing in the same boring ideas of revenge and forbidden love. What it is lacking is some real depth, real impact, real emotion. Many years pass in the film's storyline and yet we're still stagnating in the same waters. The only notable one of the lot is the actor playing Ian, Naomi Watts's son, a strong talent who shows just how much love and torment he feels. From the get-go, you can see the fault in the design, forcing friendship first and playing their sons like pawns in some twisted sex game. What fills AMOUR is far less interesting than advertised, constantly waiting for something to happen that never does.

Interesting Aussie film that at its best (and beginning) bears some similarities to Bergman in its visual seaside style and in its slow, deliberate character development. This is definitely a character driven movie with very adult themes. Its Oz morality is as different from the US's as Sweden's is. Each place is distinct in this respect. While visually appealing, I don't imply that is as good as Bergman. Wright and Watts are perfect in their roles.

Actors performance was average. I found the story line disturbing.

Not very believable, but still entertaining. A teenage male fantasy movie.

I am not into gerontophilia but the story was so intriguing to me that it would certainly make it to my Recommended Movies list for anyone who is bored with regular love stories. Also, since I have seen almost all the movies by Naomi Watts that I can get my hands on because I think she is truly a gem, especially when it comes to all-rounded acting in many different roles, I would certainly think that this is one of her masterpieces. Therefore, this movie is probably for all her fans who enjoy, or at least do not reject, convoluted relationships.

THE MOST BORING MOVIE EVER. I have no idea who the target audience was nor who would ever think this story was remotely believable. It just goes to show to me again that anything that lists "the sundance festival" should be avoided at all costs.

Movie started off really slow, but picked up later, uncomfortable to watch, because of the crossed boundry between the sons and mothers, but credit is given for the good acting.

Intimate Female Friendship explored...

Above all, I find the subject matter of this very good and very interesting movie to be exploring the intense relationship of the two mothers, who have been best-friends since childhood, and excellently portrayed by NaomiWatts and RobinPenn ; interestingly, their friendship is so close, that to some of the others characters it appears that they are gay and in a relationship with each other... an issue the two women come to discuss and then dismiss. I do not believe that their being gay is what is being conveyed, however... in the right circumstances, it might be entirely possible to conceive that their friendship might advance to the next... or sexual level. Additionally, there are two young adult and very handsome sons involved in this equation of friendship, and at one point, boundaries become blurred beyond recognition. Mothers can "enjoy" some extremely powerful connections with their sons, and I wonder if the women are actually able to practice a higher level of intimacy with EACH-OTHER as they enter into a love/sexual relationship with each other's son. Is this an instance of the mothers commencing a sexual relationship with each other by-proxy?... courtesy of their sons as stand-ins? I definitely believe that this movie is much more complicated than it might appear to be, to the point that I am unable to dismiss it as "soft-core porn".

And finally, the sub-tropical scenery is just simply gorgeous... and gorgeous in a way that might cause feelings of want-and-longing to come very, very close to the surface demanding to be acted upon. Anyone who has traveled to a stunningly beautiful locale might understand this experience of buried feelings demanding to be expressed.

A very interesting and very well acted movie, deserving to be viewed as much more than might be seen on the surface.
