Sink your teeth into the first novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Sookie Stackhouse series--the books that gave life to the Dead and inspired the HBO® original series True Blood .

Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Bon Temps, Louisiana. She's quiet, doesn't get out much, and tends to mind her own business--except when it comes to her "disability." Sookie can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. Then along comes Bill Compton. He's tall, dark, handsome--and Sookie can't hear a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting for all her life...

But Bill has a disability of his own: he's a vampire with a bad reputation. And when a string of murders hits Bon Temps--along with a gang of truly nasty bloodsuckers looking for Bill--Sookie starts to wonder if having a vampire for a boyfriend is such a bright idea.

This book was so much fun to read, I had to finish the series! Fun and fast paced. Who knew I would like fantasy including vampires and people who can read minds? Not me!

Vampires trying to openly co-exist with modern society? Fun concept! A character trying to cope with uncontrollable telepathy? Also a fun!
these two entertaining concepts were executed so poorly that it would be funny if i wasn't so busy mourning the lost potential.

Most characters are boring and have no flaws, Sookie is the worst mary sue i've ever seen, the romance is awkwardly forced, and the writing style is as dry as a 6th grader journaling about their visit to grandma's house. i legitimately don't know how this was popular enough to be picked up as a TV show.

the most frustrating thing about this book is that i kind of want to read the rest of the series just to see how bad it gets, and i don't know why.

This was my second time reading this the first book of the Sookie Stackhouse series. Once again I am confirmed in my view that books are always better than the TV/film depictions. Just little details and moments are swayed awry in the conversion. I liked the main idea behind it of how vampires do exist and they have come out to the real world. I think the depiction of how society would react and the groupies that would emerge is accurate to what would happen. Something comes through that seems to be missing in other series based on vampires. It is a fun read. One that is different from the typical vampire novels.

Did not finish. Poorly-written. Also, even though I know this book is well over a decade old, I am so tired of reading about pretty heroines who point out tertiary characters as both unattractive and stupid. And of course, these heroines aren't mean because they just "feel sorry for" these other girls. So trite and shallow. Too bad, because I really wanted to like this.

Sookie Stackhouse can’t keep a boyfriend. She’s smart and blonde and pretty, but she is also able to read minds, which isn’t all that much fun. Then she meets Bill. She can’t read his mind because he is … undead.

This is the beginning of an absorbing series. They have kept me up late many nights because they are so hard to stop reading!

The first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series is a lot of fun! Don't let the vampire on the cover scare you off.

Thoroughly enjoyed Dead Until Dark. I checked out the book after watching the True Blood series and was pleased to find that the first book was even better ( No surprise there) I love the fact that even though the show was pretty on the mark, that the books themselves delve into much more information about our favourites. There is alot of Erotica, but if you've caught glimpses of the show, you already know that. So if thats not your thing, don't check out these book. I however thoroughly enjoyed it. On to book 2.

Do vampires really exist? Yes!...in my opinion. But they all don't obtain their blood by biting. The vampire theme has an esoteric meaning. This book focuses on the Hollywood type vampire. Real vampires thrive on the blood of certain groups of people. It revitalizes them. The violence and debauchery in this book is typical of this society. It didn't bother me because they happen regardless to the words or descriptions used to present them.
