Both an enjoyable romp as two cultures meet, clash, and find common areas, plus insight into how someone in a wheelchair chooses to pursue a real life--or not. This is based on a true story.

I watched this film with my Mom ( in her 80's) and my 4 sisters, and we all absolutely loved it. An affecting, authentic film about two men from completely different worlds developing a meaningful relationship with one another. Some themes in common with "Me Before You", but I gotta say this French film outshines its counterpart. Nominated in 2013 for the Golden Globe Best Foreign Film (lost to "Amour"); winner/nominee for many indie and major film awards.

If you only watch one foreign film in your life. Watch this one!

Culture-clash comedy blends with heart-tugging true-life drama in this French box-office hit. François Cluzet is Philippe, a wealthy man left paralyzed from the neck down after an accident. Interviewing worthy types for the job of carer, Philippe is struck by Driss, a street-smart criminal who’s merely applying in order to receive benefits. Admiring his irreverence, Philippe hires Driss and moves him into his palatial home. Bonding ensues, amid many raised eyebrows.

A charming, funny, completely entertaining film. Knowing in advance that it's based on a true story is important, because the story might otherwise seem too improbable. Well-acted in addition.

Based on a true story, which makes this such an enjoyable uplifting movie to watch, the story and characters are superbly written; with humor and compassion all backed in one, a rare find in today's movies. A movie worth watching again.

Other: Prostitution is portrayed as normal, as is marijuana use. There is, however, a strong scene where the older brother ensures his younger brother gets pulled out of trafficking cocaine.

(Phillipe is dictating a letter to Magalie, to his penpal, Eléonore) Phillipe: "Her shining eyes are made of charming minerals, and in this strange, symbolic world..." Magalie: "And in this strange... symbolic... world..." Driss: "F*cking boring!" Phillipe: "...where the inviolate angel and ancient sphinx..." Magalie: "Is that with an 'i' or a 'y'?" Driss: "This is killing my mind." Phillipe: "'Sphinx' is with an 'i'." Driss: "Why bother with this crap? Sphinxes, daisies, angels... You'd go for this stuff?" Magalie: "True, one could be more direct. ..."And ancient sphinx..." Go on." Driss: "What's she look like?" Phillipe: "I don't know. That's not what matters. It's intellectual and emotional, not physical. I want a mind-to-mind relationship." Driss: "If she's a troll, it'll be mind-to-troll!"
