worth watching...especially if you are thinking about taking a cruise....DVD did not explain the difference between "foreign flag" ships and US flagged ships. US "flagged" ships (not to be confused with the term US company) have many more safety regulations ! The majority of cruise ships are "flagged" foreign....e.g. Liberia which has virtually no regulations at all ! US implemented alot of the regualtions after the Titanic disaster.
DVD filmmakers sure could have come up with a more appropriate title !!!
There are 2 (I think) US flagged ships that cruise the Hawaiian Islands. Norweigen flagged ships are considered the next safest.
If you go on a foreign flagged ship ...take your own safety equipment !!! and save yourself !!!

A quite interesting documentary, although the content does not match the description given. If you are expecting a look at how the new cruise ships of today are built, how they differ from the ones of yesterday and where all the new technology will take cruise-ship construction in the future, you will be severely disappointed. This documentary is about the sinking of the Titanic and the sinking of the Costa Concordia. Period. And while they keep referring to the sinking of the Costa Concordia, the fact remains (but is never touched upon) that that ship ran aground, it did not sink. I assume though that mentioning this would have made the parallel with the Titanic more difficult to see. Although the documentary does look at a few other things here and there, these moments are very short, and few and far between. And the use and re-use of the same computer animation for showing both the damage inflicted to the Titanic and Costa Concordia and what created it, is annoying. We are treated to the same clips no less than 5-8 times, with basically the same narrative. The Titanic, being such a well-known subject, and the reason for its sinking such a familiar topic, a lot of redundant information could have been edited out, i.e. the ship did not have enough lifeboats, the watertight compartments flooded, etc etc etc... The only reason the Titanic was included to such length here is because the sinking occurred 100 year (to the year) before the Costa Concordia and thus, someone thought the parallel interesting. While it could have been a nice 5-minute footnote, or introduction, and other disasters explored instead, the documentary chooses to focus on these two ships for almost 90% of its running time. As such, a good half-hour of this program is redundant, and quite frankly, boring. Having said all this, and having written at the beginning that it was interesting, the one saving grace of this NOVA special is the real-life, you-are-there-when-it-happened camcorder footage aboard the Costa Concordia, the day it ran aground, and the interviews with a few of the real-life passengers aboard the ship, who were rescued. The human element makes for a great story and these elements alone make the documentary worth seeing. The rest is too general, and basically time-filler and repetitive, but the Costa Concordia material is ***most*** interesting. Worth a look for sure...
