Fresh from ten years as a U.S. Army Ranger, Quinn Colson finds his hands full as the newly elected sheriff of Tibbehah County, Mississippi.  An old buddy running a local gun shop may be in over his head when stolen army rifles start showing up in the hands of a Mexican drug gang.

At the same time, an abused-child case leads Quinn and his tough-as-nails deputy, Lillie Virgil, deep into the heart of a bootleg baby racket and a trail of darkness and death. And when the two cases collide, Quinn and his allies are forced to realize that, though they may be home from the war, they are now in the fight of their lives.

Another excellent novel by Atkins. This is just so believable about the attitudes and doings of the deep South. Colson is very well portrayed as a modest returning hero. I like all the characters especially his friend Boom and Lillie, his female deputy.

Excellent book. Worth reading.

Ace Atkins has done it again. Atkins is considered one of the top American writers of crime fiction and in “The Lost Ones”, the second book in his new series of “Quinn Colson” novels, he clearly demonstrates the reasons for this critical regard. This book follows on closely from “The Ranger”, the first book in the series, which was nominated for an Edgar award. The setting for both novels is rural Mississippi and in addition to the usual themes to be found in crime novels, examines the challenges faced by returning veterans as they reintegrate into civilian life… or not.

Ace Atkins is a great writer. He makes Mississippi come alive as a present day community. I want to sit outside in an adirondack chair and eat breakfast with Quinn, Jason and Caddy!
