I feel like this book REALLY resonated with me. There were lots of "AHA" moments that made me actually lean into my feelings. Some themes Brene speaks about are uncertainty, self-doubt, perfectionism, and shame. What motivates these feelings? What behaviors or actions do these feelings motivate? What thoughts lead to these feelings?
She also provides lots of additional reading.
I highly encourage to give this book a try.
Too much blah blah blah blah. A friend referred me to the book stating it helped her deal with her perfectionist traits. Not for me.
This was my first Brene' Brown book. I rather liked it. Having watched the author speak at a Ted Talk I found myself appreciating her willingness and skill at exploring tough topics like shame, guilt, and vulnerability. I liked the way the author spoke weaving research with personal stories. I sought out a few podcasts to hear more and eventually found my nose buried deep in one of her books. She knows her voice and she writes exactly as she speaks.
Brene Brown's books are just so good at helping you to take a step back from the situation and get real with yourself.
Love this book. This book helped me to pull back, and get real with myself. It reminded me to focus on what matters and let go of what I can't control.
I've been challenging myself to grow over the past 8 years especially, with an enthusiasm for meditation and right living. This book offers a unique medicine we are not getting from other sources--namely, confronting the "boggie-man" of shame with courage and skill. I enjoy how the author uses so many personal testimonies because after all, that's where the nitty-gritty of growing occurs. In all the little moments we triumph over the epidemic of shame in our culture. She teaches about connection, and what better way to not feel alone in your shame if someone gives plenty of examples about facing it in their own lives. To me this proves that Brene walks the walk and is not just intellectualizing everything. Authentic, beautiful, and powerful. The real deal.
I am a full time psychotherapist with 34 years experience and 6 years of university training. I regularly assign this woman,s books/tapes to my patience......and I keep a copy of her tapes in both my vehicles.
I really loved this book and connected with it on so many levels. I recommend it.
I had a high expectation but am disappointed. As a professor doing teaching and research, I understand that the author discusses main point through talking about her own experience is to avoid the tendency of teaching the readers. However, she just talks tooooooo much about herself. Also, she repeated mentioned the shame research and how people resist the idea, it also makes me uncomfortable. I do not have any preposition in loving or hating shame research, assuming that I probably dislike this topic and attempting to persuade me into believing her research topic is extremely important, to me, made me tired in reading it till the end.
This was recommend by a colleague. I found it difficult to get into as the author references frequently her own issues. Maybe if you are a perfectionist its a good read.
The "perfect" book for ALL of us who are anxious to be PERFECT... and who can not possibly be. Excellent book!!! Wonderful author!!!
Great book about how to live a happy loving life. She has two TED talks you can watch first as a great introduction to her works. They are truly life changing.
Recommend. Well-written, easy to read, compact book about Ms. Brown's research that focuses on living "wholeheartedly". Essential to living this life is to LOVE OURSELVES. (You can't love anyone else completely or well if you don't love yourself completely or well.) Her research into patterns includes common "DO" words: worthiness, rest, play, trust, faith, intuition, hope, authenticity, love, belonging, joy, gratitude, and creativity. Common "DON'T" words: perfection, numbing, certainty, exhaustion, self-sufficiency, being cool, fitting in, judgment, and scarcity. A good follow up to her research on shame.
This book is full of helpful wisdom that inspired me to be my best a true self. Highly recommend
