Good action movie. Fast pace. The action was good but the plot so so. The movie left the ending hanging, thus 3.5 ratings. If the ending were better, I would have given 4.
Lara Croft is the daughter of an adventurer who goes missing. To find her father she goes on a search. This movie is insanely good, it has a lot of action and adventure, and a great storyline. I was never bored while watching this movie. The actors were really good, and Alicia Vikander who plays Lara Croft, did an incredible job. This movie is a must-watch if you’re looking for a movie that has action, adventure, and mystery. This movie is 2 hours long, but I didn’t feel like I wasted my time because it was such a great movie. I would rate this show a 5/5. @Khutoria of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
3 1/2 stars , because this is a video game movie, which means its all action, light on plot and thats ok.
- a decent action movie
- better then most "video game movies"
- rent, do not buy, its a one time watch action movie
A young Lara Croft works out at a gym she cannot afford and works as a bike courier (wait, I thought she shoot up wild animals with guns, oh wait, that comes later). She finds out she is the heir to a fortune, but is also missing a father figure. In what might be the best attempt to build character arc, we see Lara Croft make a decision to go search for her father, she gets on board a large boat and goes to sea with a new companion to search for her dad. The movie turns into an adventure movie or if I wanted to use video game terminology, a cut scene.
Some people are going to hate this movie, they may even say that Indiana Jones is the superior movie if you want to see someone go on an adventure in search of ancient artifacts. Considering that the early Tomb Raider games were about some Posh British woman who went off and killed things, in order to retrieve some lost artifact (she is a raider, not a professor), I think this movie atleast gives Lara more motivation.
A prior commenter said "just meh". That's about right. This could have been a lot better. I watched most of it at 1.5x speed on my DVR, and that lessened the disappointment. I always like Alicia Vikander (who plays Lara), so it wasn't a total loss. Watch this if you can't find something better on the shelf, so to speak.
Just awful! Computer graphics ridiculously poorly executed. As bad as today's Disney animation. Unoriginal, stupid script. Sad to see Kristen Scott Thomas - in desperate need of a good meal - and Jimmy McNulty and even Walton Goggins so hard up for work that they ended up in this mess.
Starts out with young women beating the hell out of each other then declines even further.
Will never understand how people descend to such a level.
For those in need of epic struggles, hie it to the Hollow Crown - anything but this garbage.
Tomb Raider is that kind of film which should be watched, when you are thriving for an action-packed film. It is interesting how there is a huge plot twist till the end, which I deeply enjoyed. I thought that maybe they could have included some game references to make it a little more interesting but other wise it was great. I also enjoyed how there was always action scenes here and there. I feel like Alicia Vikander played the role of Lara Croft very well. Watching this movie is a great way to spend your time. I hope that in the future there will be a second movie. A solid 4 star. @SirAbstractCanvas of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
Rated 8/10. I thought this was pretty good overall. Alicia Vikander does a decent job as Lara Croft.
The action scenes are top notch.
I'm hoping that there will be a sequel to this, but so far there doesn't seem to be anything in the works.
Wasn't great - wasn't bad - just meh. Honestly you can probably go on YouTube - look for the video game clips of this game (which are amazing) and find a more enjoyable time with more like-able characters. This is a movie you watch when there's nothing else to watch.
Saw it in the theater and stayed to the end. Lots of action and it must have been a lot of work to produce. If you like action movies from start to finish then you may like this one. Lots of imagination went into this movie.
Do you remember the old Lara Croft with Angelina Jolie? Well, forget her. This one is way more dark. The plot was not like the other ones. Unless you are a huge Croft fan, this movie is not worth your time. The CGI was good, though.
An enjoyable escape from reality. Good action. Good story line. Nothing too spectacular. I think she wore the same green t-shirt through most of the movie.
Directed by Roar Uthaug in 2018 based on the 2013 video game of the same name, this American and British film depicts the adventure of Lara Croft.
Lara finds a pre-recorded video message from her father detailing his research into Himiko (卑弥呼), the mythical Queen of Yamatai （邪馬台） who was said to command the power over life and death.
She embarks on a perilous journey to her father's last-known destination---the island of Yamatai.
Although I enjoyed this action-adventure flick, the island of Yamatai is ridiculously misplaced.
Himiko (卑弥呼) is a historical figure who lived during the period (c. 170–248 CE) as a shamaness-queen of Yamataikoku (邪馬台国)---part of ancient Japan.
However, the whole story is fake fiction since her tomb has NOT been found yet.
Very good action movie. Loved the stereotypes, loved the pace and loved the fact that there was no Angelina.
If you can turn off your mind and watch this movie you will very likely enjoy it. Alicia Vikander is a better Lara Croft than Angelina Jolie and Jolie was very good. Jolie had much better writing as this movie is stupid beyond belief if you actually think as you watch. It starts with Lara poor and later implies that Lara is this way because she won't take her father's money because she would consider it as conceding that he is dead. While not spelled out, it seems clear Lara would have been a minor when dad disappeared so she wouldn't have really had a choice. But even if that is the case that is just not how humans work- You've just lost someone so you are going to cut everything out of your life that has to do with them? No, people seek comfort in the things they know, like their own home.
Next, rather than accessing the vast funds available to her Lara pawns a priceless necklace that is her one remaining memento of her mother. How does that make sense? Then, after tracing her father to Asia Lara is randomly attacked at the docks, AND IT IS RANDOM, the attackers never show back up and have no connections to the actual bad guys. Apparently the writers thought Lara pawning necklace and arriving in Asia was too much story line all at once and an action sequence was needed.
Frankly, with the exception of Alicia Vikander, the first Tomb Raider movie was better in pretty much every sense.
Boring, lame, uninspired. Not the worst I've seen, but far from the best.
Some good action scenes but as a whole, it is a very weak film. The new games are much more fun. If you're a fan of the series why waste time with the movie, and if you're just an action movie person there are far better offerings out there.
Was pleasantly surprised how FUN this movie is. Lots of non-stop action scenes and amazing visuals. Alicia Vikander definitely has a different take than Angelina's Jolie's iconic role, but she does well to be a different type of Lara Croft. Would recommend a watch as it's just good entertainment - not realistic but fun.
I can see the effort Alicia Vikander put into this role, but the action in this film is mediocre, and there are not enough puzzles. The dialogue also has no wit at all. The style of this film seems a bit outdated too; exploitive bad white guy, plus the Asian thugs on fishing boats seems a bit 90's.
My view may be biased as I have been playing the games from the beginning, so please take it with a grain of salt.
While fair to the concept of the Tomb Raider franchise, this film comes in as an underwhelming experience. The adaptation from the Tomb Raider 2013 video game is rather weak and calls upon many details revealed in the squeal game Rise of the Tomb Raider and the companion books and comics. Lara's journey through Yamatai was a showcase of how she became a survivor against heavy odds . Over the coarse of the film there was very little growth in that aspect.
Many key characters to the story are either non-existent or are downplayed to scene filler rolls. And many of the games QTE's are used almost so exactly as to call them re-renders for a remastered edition of the game.
If you are looking for a simple action film then this will probably foot the bill. But if you are an avid gamer you would get more enjoyment out of the games, novels, and comics.
8.5/10 as film by it's self 6.9/10 for the portrayal of the franchise.
Vikander underwhelms as Lara Croft. She has great strength obviously but her overall presence just sort of fades into the background. Overall the movie was okay. The villain was more of an ass than an evil psychopath.
Alicia Vikander's take as Lara, and her character's bond with her father, are what make this adaptation work. The movie has the elements you'd expect out of the franchise- global threatening ancient secrets, improbable escapes, preposterous hidden places, and situations that no one should rightfully be able to survive.
Watchable but the video game was way better, even though the producers of the movie were the makers of the video game.
I just like watching this movie because of Alicia's performance. I looked at the extras on the Blu-Ray and see she was always into this a child and trained extensively. She put allot of soul into her part. The overall movie was a nice fun watch. I have watched it twice already and put it on hold again. The hold-list speaks for itself and it has been circulating for quite a while.
You have to suspend belief with some of the action scenes, but that's typical of any big-budget action movie. Still, I was impressed. This adaptation makes the Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies look like commercials for Axe body spray. (It helps that Alicia Vikander ACTUALLY KNOWS THE FRANCHISE - she said on Fallon that she played the games as a kid.)
I will definitely seek out the sequel, if there is one. (I imagine there will be. You don't have a cliffhanger like that unless a sequel is in the works.)
Too many improbable and impossible scenes.
Throughout all barriers and challenges, her hair looked fabulous! :)
"Overall, I really enjoyed Tomb Raider, I think Alicia Vikander was a great Lara Croft and she really helped propel the movie forward. Yes, she does some stupid stuff but no adventure without stupid and determination lol. I thought she physically embodied this twenty-one year old Lara and it was great seeing where her adventures started. The supporting characters were also fine and did their job for the story..."
