I'm reading another one of hers now & it has the same issues cited here. But I just read her memoir that talks about how she writes, and she's a HIGHLY detailed person. You wouldn't believe her daily habits! I DO like her regular…

I basically agree with DanglingConversations. It is a very good detective story buried in a lot of schlock! I was a bit more generous that DC and gave it a rating of 3.

Thank you Joanne (April 2020) for your review. This book is a plodding, frustrating read. It needs a good edit. There is a good story buried in there somewhere but it is a shame the author could not control her impulses to give the reader…

I quite enjoyed the many storylines that there were among the book. Although I must admit that the book was drug out. Around the end of the chapter 'May 6' I found that I was no longer absorbing and enjoying the book. I was prepared for it…

JOANNE'S MYSTERY PICKS “More” is not always better. I say this in reference to the length of this latest Inspector Lynley novel which clocks in at 690 pages. I found it often tedious and repetitive, bogged down with the ongoing…

I know many people love Elizabeth George, but I find her very contrived and boring. A Californian writer pretending to be British is just a little too much for me. The way she throws around the English "lingo" is laughable, and not in a…

Really one of the very best of the series.

Couldn't wait for this book and, as usual for this series, I had a hard time to put it down... so I would say it is very good in comparison to other books in this genre; however, compared to other books in this series which I love, I feel…

I thought the story was engaging although I was lost at times. The characters are written as though we know why they are beloved. After finishing this book I discovered that this is actually book #20 in a series. So while I recommend this…

This is, in a way, one of the strongest books in the series. However, I do wish I'd started at the beginning keeping a list of all the characters and who they were. This is such a heavily populated book that I had a lot of trouble at…

Hurray for Barbara Havers and her determination to get to the bottom of a mysterious death. It may be part of the Lynley series but it is Detective Havers book. She well deserves to take center stage.

Ms. George seems to just want to fill up pages. Way too many descriptions of people, rooms, houses, gardens, ad infinitum, but not much in the way of good dialogue. Nowhere near the quality of her earlier novels. Slogged through 200…

Loved how Ms George referenced our local car wash in this novel. Overall I enjoyed the book despite the length. Doubling the investigation certainly added to the verbage but provided many of the clues subsequently utilized in the solution.…

Way too long and very dull. Maybe the Lynley series has gone as far as it can as entertainment.

I agree with those who say the story is worth reading - all 700 pages. George is at her best in this mystery though, admittedly, it's because she spends much ink on Barbara Havers. She's a wonderful, richly complex and complete character…

was a long read - 700 pages but worth it. have read all Elizabeth George's books. Will read her next book of course. i love to sit down and read Elizabeth George. She's a great writer!!!

Another FANTASTIC Elizabeth George novel! I couldn't put this one down and it's one of my favorites in the Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers series.

My first George novel; long but I quite enjoyed it. The "mutt and jeff" police heroes are great partners. In southwest England, there's serious, serious mischief afoot: of course the bureaucracy, insularity, bad roads and hubris stand in…

GREAT addition to the series! I read it while on vacation so could enjoy the long read. I reread the last chapter to really soak in the Havers part. Brilliant!

I absolutely loved this book, as I love all of George's Inspector Lynley novels! It's a commitment, though, nearly 700 pages, but worth it.

Don't make the mistake of thinking this is just another British crime procedural. It is that, of course, but there us so much more here. The "She" in the title is, in reality, many she's - mothers, daughters, grandmothers, friends,…

This is the 20th book in the series about Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers of New Scotland Yard. If you have not read any of these books, please start with A Great Deliverance and read them in order. The book immediately prior to this…

Here is classic Elizabeth George. It's a good old-fashioned British police procedural, but as always, so much more. The characters, new and long-standing, are extremely well-developed, and the crime(s) emerge from a deeply flawed and human…
