Engaging, nuanced characters and a quirky plot made this novella the perfect introduction to Alyssa Cole and her Reluctant Royals series. I'm not usually a romance reader, but an unusual premise (the couple bonds over puzzles, anime, and other aspects of nerd culture) and an inclusive cast of characters drew me in and I now plan to read the entire series.Engaging, nuanced characters and a quirky plot made this novella the perfect introduction to Alyssa Cole and her Reluctant Royals series. Reggie Hobbs is a successful Black businesswoman whose nerd culture website (GirlsWithGlasses) is becoming more popular by the day. The only thing holding her back is crippling insomnia…and the only cure is the soothing voice of a puzzle-solving live streamer who just took down all his feeds. Luckily for her, Gus needs her help as well. He’s in charge of building an escape room for an upcoming convention based on an anime he knows nothing about, but Reggie just happens to be obsessed with. Before long, their online flirtation transforms into real-life chemistry. Summary:
When a disastrous dust storm ruins the first manned mission to Mars, the crew assumes botanist Mark Watney is dead and leaves him behind as they flee the planet. After Watney regains consciousness, returns to base, and treats his own wounds, he must figure out how to survive without being able to communicate with anyone on Earth. He soon figures out how to generate water and grow his own food, which will allow him to survive until the next crew arrives in 4 years.
Back on Earth, NASA discovers Watney is alive through satellite images and begins developing a plan to rescue him. Watney builds a solar-powered rover in hopes of traveling to the next landing site (it also allows him to contact NASA), but disaster strikes when his base is damaged and his crops die. This forces NASA to find a quicker solution involving the return of his crew, but the plan is dangerous for both Watney and the other members of the Ares 3. Troubles continue to plague Watney, but thanks to his constant ingenuity, the rescue is ultimately a success. When a disastrous dust storm ruins the first manned mission to Mars, the crew assumes botanist Mark Watney is dead and leaves him behind as they flee the planet. Despite its terrifying premise (when college students begin falling into an unending sleep, an entire town finds itself in lockdown as the death toll starts to climb), The Dreamers is a very quiet novel. Walker's ethereal prose makes readers feel like they are in a dream themselves, viewing the action through a thick haze. While the characters' terror is palpable, this can make it hard to really connect with them. However, I still enjoyed the overall experience. Readers looking for a tight plot and clear answers are likely to be disappointed, but fans of short stories and atmospheric literary fiction should give The Dreamers a try.Despite its terrifying premise (when college students begin falling into an unending sleep, an entire town finds itself in lockdown as the death toll starts to climb), The Dreamers is a very quiet novel. In general, I'm not a fan of police procedurals, but when I had to choose a mystery novel for an assignment, my professor suggested In the Woods and I'm so glad she did. The premise is compelling from the start (a detective with only vague memories from a past childhood trauma must solve a similar modern-day murder case ), but it was really the atmospheric descriptions of Dublin and complex, empathetic characters that drew me in and kept me reading.
This isn't a fast-paced novel (prepare for lots of moody introspection from the main character and the occasional distracting side plot), but it's beautifully written and left me wanting more. I quickly moved on to the next book in Dublin Murder Squad series after finishing In the Woods, and I'd highly recommend it to fans of literary fiction looking for an entry into the mystery genre. In general, I'm not a fan of police procedurals, but when I had to choose a mystery novel for an assignment, my professor suggested In the Woods and I'm so glad she did. Lo Blacklock is a travel writer with an outstanding career opportunity- the chance to cover the Aurora, a luxury cruise liner with views of the Northern Lights. Despite her apartment being ransacked right before she leaves, Lo refuses to miss the cruise, though she self-medicates with alcohol and antidepressants to deal with her PTSD and insomnia. On the first evening of the trip, Lo encounters a flustered young woman in Cabin 10 before an awkward dinner with the other journalists, including her ex-boyfriend Ben, the yacht’s owner Lord Bullmer, and his wife Anne who is a cancer patient. Lo wakes up when she hears a scream and a loud splash and runs to the balcony where she thinks she sees a woman’s body in the water. She’s sure it’s the woman she met earlier that day in Cabin 10, but the head of security assures her that the room has been empty the entire time. No one believes Lo due to her drinking, so she spends the rest of the voyage trying to solve the case on her own, even though someone is now threatening Lo herself.Lo Blacklock is a travel writer with an outstanding career opportunity- the chance to cover the Aurora, a luxury cruise liner with views of the Northern Lights. Emma wants to be paid for the dress, which was meant to be worn by Ashbury's ex-fiancee. However, the duke proposes marriage instead. He offers Emma all the worldly comfort she could desire in exchange for a loveless marriage of convenience. As soon as she delivers an heir, she can retire to a quiet country life and they never have to see each other again. Emma, who was cast out by her father after she let herself be lost to love before, doesn't have many respectable prospects, so she agrees and becomes Ashbury's duchess in hopes that she can use her new fortune to help an unmarried, pregnant client escape a ruined reputation. However, Ashbury and Emma soon find they are VERY compatible in bed and begin to fall in love, despite their promise to keep emotions out of their relationship. Complicating matters are Ashbury's bitter ex-fiancee, Emma's unkind father, and Ashbury's secret identity as a crime-fighting vigilante, but with the help Emma's new friends (who later receive their own books in this series) and her own headstrong determination, the couple is able to overcome their initial reluctance and build a happy life together. When beautiful, brave seamstress Emma Gladstone arrives at the Duke of Ashbury's manor wearing a wedding dress, he's instantly intrigued. My daughter LOVES The Griffins of Castle Cary like no other book we've read together. She’s almost 7, and it's a perfect read aloud. She learned a lot of history, loved the ghost story, and enjoyed predicting what would happen next. All hail Hilary Mantel, master of bringing the Tudor court to life so palpably you feel you are really there! As a lover of this time period, I will read anything centering on the Tudor dynasty from Shakespeare to the silliest YA romp. However, Mantel's masterpiece outshines them all, following the rise of lowborn Thomas Cromwell as he becomes Henry VIII's closest advisor. Cromwell is often portrayed as a villain in Tudor fiction, so it was fascinating getting to know him, his family, and his political allies and enemies through a protagonist's lens.
Wolf Hall is dense (almost 700 pages) and it can be difficult to keep track of its numerous characters (especially when so many of them have the same first names), but don't let that deter you. If you're a fan of court intrigue, you won't want to miss this winner of the 2009 Booker Prize. All hail Hilary Mantel, master of bringing the Tudor court to life so palpably you feel you are really there! No one write magical realism for teens like Maggie Stiefvater. Her lyrical, ethereal prose will instantly transport you to a world that appears very much like your own, but unsettles you in the BEST ways. Stiefvater makes you feel as if you are really in Bicho Raro, a small Colorado town that draws colorful characters searching for miraculous cures, such as a runaway bride who is always covered in butterflies and rain. However, the miracle rarely works the way they expect and the miracle workers may be the ones most in need of divine intervention.
I took away a star for the occasional Latinx stereotype (Stiefvater clearly did her research, but I'm always a little uncomfortable when authors focus on a culture that's not their own), but overall, this is fantastic novel for fans of character-driven YA fiction with magical undertones.
