LOVE IT! F Scott Fitzgerald's egoist meets the movie the Hangover (right?!).
And the language! Beautiful! Especially in this audiobook, where the author read this book to me. I swooned when Tartt described Francis as vulpine.
This book is also the source of one of my favorite quotes, "how do they drive you mad, the furies?" I didn't even know. But I love the classicism in this novel, which seeps beyond the setting into the plot and the theme. *more swoonLOVE IT! F Scott Fitzgerald's egoist meets the movie the Hangover (right?!).

This is a crackerjack book of heartbreaking sentiment. There will be sentences that make you gasp, maybe cry, underline and write in your library book.

Love it! I finally got around to listening to this gem. It's well written and well read. It's kind of heart breaking and very heart warming. It's impossible, but true! I think everyone should read the book.

Catchy and clever, like Sesame Street always is. There's a bit of character-recognition, "Who's that dressed up like a pirate?", some counting opportunities, and a rhyme fashioned after Poe's "The Raven."

I was skeptical when I read this to myself at work. I thought, "This is awfully dramatic. Won't my children worry if I tell them tantrums result in floods and storms?" I wasn't sure if they'd get the metaphor.
Then I went home to my own Finn, who was in a monster mood. He threw a terrific and very dramatic fit. I joined him on the floor and told him about this book. "In the book, there's a boy named Finn, just like you. He is so mad. So super mad that he yells and his loud yelling makes the house shake. Does that sound like a book you would like to read? The Finn in the book is sad. He's so sad that he cries so many tears and floods the floor of the house. Can you imagine! The floor all wet with tears." And my own Finn stops yelling and listens. He wants to hear more about the book-Finn.

Definitly a book-with-a-message. Books-with-a-message are usually less effective (and more heavy handed) at conveying said message than books that are just really good stories. This was still a lovely and timely and well handled story. I also appreciated the bit at the end about the authors' real-life gender non-conformist son.Definitly a book-with-a-message. Told in a non-linear format, The Lone Ranger was much more fun and campy than I imagined. It might not be what you expect, but it was a lot of fun.

Ann Fiery is funny: "Spells are often easier to deploy that talismans, because they are primarily verbal. For instance, it's a snap to make the victim of your choice rip off all his clothes and dance wildly. All you need to do is write ... in bat's blood and ... and ... and then sit back and watch the show" (141). See? Really funny. Tongue in cheek and yet she doesn't demean her topic. Sweet illustrations, cutie story. Except... it was a story inside a story inside a story. I think that's right. There's the story you're reading, there's the story the Daddy reads, there's the story Daughter tells, and there's the story the character-in-the-Daughter-story tells. What?

Alex and Lulu are different. Are they too different, or just different enough? It's a hart-warming kids book with a moral, I'll let you figure out which it is.

Quiet and contemplative. This is a thoughtful dialog between mother and son about ideas of togetherness, aloneness, and individuality. The illustrations are meager - which raises the age-feeling of this book. But they do not distract.

I thought this was a lovely book!
I've spent time as an existentialist (Camus asserted that he was not existentialist, but many others claim that he is) and a nihilist and an absurdist. I think that means that nothing in this book was shocking or even depressing to me. Instead, I read these modernist prose like a fresh breath after all the musty (and adored!) classics and period fiction I've been into.
While reading, I was reminded of Saul Bellow and Raymond Chandler. And I love Raymond Chandler.I thought this was a lovely book!

I read this on the tail end of Camus' The Stranger, because I all of a sudden got a jones for post-modern realism. Does that ever happen to you? So, it took me way longer than usual to finish this book because I read it slowly and savored it. This is good literature. Beautiful writing. Occasionally really funny, sometimes kind of heartbreaking.
Henderson is so earnest and broken and even when he knows he wants to change he turns away from the hard business. I love the foil that his internal self is to his external self. He's thoughtful and well-meaning on the inside, and on the outside, he is enormous and haphazard and destructive. Does that ever happen to you? He can't help himself, and I cherished reading about it.I read this on the tail end of Camus' The Stranger, because I all of a sudden got a jones for post-modern realism. This is one of my perennial favorites. I've read it a couple times already and will read it again in another few years. Um, my only hang-up in enthusiastic recommendation is that the ending gets quite weird.
