This was a tough and sobering book but so impactful. Chock full of real life examples, Gawande paints a disturbing view of health care as it is for those with terminal conditions. He also makes a compelling case for change and shares what is possible and why it's important. It is a valuable read for anyone facing end of life decisions. This was a tough and sobering book but so impactful. I enjoyed this novel, admittedly perhaps more so because I am from the region in which it is set and I could picture in my mind exactly the areas described. That aside, White did a solid job of developing credible characters and creating a sense of suspense throughout. This book held my interest and I recommend it --- especially to "Mainers."I enjoyed this novel, admittedly perhaps more so because I am from the region in which it is set and I could picture in my mind exactly the areas described. Threaded with aspects of Korea's 20th century woes and tales of brave, hard-working women, this book was positively fascinating. I read it in a day or two.

I have recommended this book to everyone I can think of and all have reported back to me that they loved it. It's an extraordinarily well-written memoir by a woman who was, by all accounts, way ahead of her time in terms of independence. Markham describes her life in Africa in vivid detail so that, as a reader, you feel that you are present as she runs in the bush on hunts, trains racehorses, and flies her airplane. This book is an adventure in itself.I have recommended this book to everyone I can think of and all have reported back to me that they loved it. This book was hilarious to the extent that, in some sections, EVERY line struck me as funny. Admittedly, I am a native Mainer and spent the majority of my life there. Still, even those "from away" will appreciate Hodgman's wit and self-deprecating humor.
He calls himself a "metaphor humorist." With humor he describes experiences that many will have tried, if not observed (e.g., backing up a trailer, buying a home). "You've given up your apartment and gotten the loan and now you are going to trade this check with 'ALL YOUR MONEY' written on it for some vague sense of progress in your life."This book was hilarious to the extent that, in some sections, EVERY line struck me as funny. - "When you cross...into Maine there is a sign at the border that says 'MAINE,' and beneath that, 'VACATIONLAND.'...This is either a cruel joke, or maybe simply an error. This biography was touching, candid and thought-provoking. I especially enjoyed the author's detailed descriptions of Native American (specifically Ojibwe) culture and ceremonies, such as a vision quest and sweat lodge. He did an excellent job of conveying deeply personal experiences in a way that was understandable to someone for whom much of what was explained was foreign. This biography was touching, candid and thought-provoking. I loved this book! Disclaimer: It's set in the area where I was raised and still have family, so it was a special delight to recognize the landscape and culture. Barring that, however, Strout masterfully developed the characters, weaving them together into a captivating story. It was both funny and sad, poignant and thought-provoking. Those who want action or intrigue will not like this book but readers who enjoy conversation and insight into characters' thoughts are likely to appreciate it.I loved this book! This was a really fun book to listen to. I bought it for a relative who loved it, too. I can't say I'm a fan of history but I learned quite a bit of history from this book in a completely entertaining way. The author did a great job of capturing the characters he met along the way and in painting detailed pictures with words. As someone who grew up in a Northland border state, it was bittersweet to "visit" again through Fox's narrative. He captured it well! This was a really fun book to listen to. I read the advance reader's edition, which came with a Vanity Fair prediction that it would "complete the informal suburban thriller trifecta that began with Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train." This was a very unusual book, so unusual that it's hard to know what to say about it. It was fascinating, poetic and filled with snippets of wisdom (e.g., " ...if I were resigned to riding 140 kilometers every day forever, I might also be enjoying it more. It's the prospect of escape that turns the joy into agony: it will end." It's a good read for those those who like armchair, vicarious experiences of stories of hardship and perseverance (such as Into Thin Air, Adrift and the like). The author is very bright and enjoys a thought world entirely unlike my own. It's worth the time. This was a very unusual book, so unusual that it's hard to know what to say about it. I highly recommend this book. It's an eye-opener and a very personal introduction to a perspective many know nothing (truthful) about. His description of what it means to be Muslim and his direct approach to dispelling the myths about it paint a beautiful story. There are so many similarities between religions; it's unfortunate that the 0.5% of extremists distort the reality. May Dr. Virji and his family experience more of the best of America instead of its darkest side.I highly recommend this book. Alexandra Fuller did a fantastic job with this first novel. She captured the tragedy of abject poverty and broken lives but also the beauty and timeless wisdom of a people who have been nearly decimated. It's a quick and powerful, sad and sobering read that tells the side of the history not well known by the majority of Americans.
This quote, I think, captures it so poignantly:
"The Rez...is an essential place.
Essential. Meaning, there is nothing more than can be taken away, removed, or forgotten.
Essential. Meaning, there remains only what is absolutely necessary."
I have already purchased it for my own collection (and I can't think of another work of fiction that I have purchased once read).Alexandra Fuller did a fantastic job with this first novel.
