This book is filled with practical advice, examples, and naughty cat behavior solutions. The number one thing I learned from this book is...cats DO NOT respond to punishment. Second best information-how to keep my indoor cats entertained without buying expensive toys that just get ignored. Well worth the time to read and pretty entertaining, too. Caveat-author is a strong proponent of allowing cats outdoors. Part biography, part adventure story, part ode to the Colorado River and its unique ecology and attractions. Thrill at the guts and gall of two women botanists undertaking this expedition in 1938 to the horror of the press, much of the academic community, and the river runners who were sure a woman wasn’t fit to handle it. Good to pair with The Green Mile, another ode to the river from a different perspective.Part biography, part adventure story, part ode to the Colorado River and its unique ecology and attractions. Everyone’s family is dysfunctional, right? Prince Harry penned a tell-all, and it’s an interesting read. He and his ghost writer have created a readable memorable book that paints Harry with a sympathetic brush and addresses his many public and private challenges but doesn’t make him look too cracked. Unsurprisingly, the paparazzi are the true evil characters in this account, with stepmother Camilla not too far behind.Everyone’s family is dysfunctional, right? Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s intact tomb yielded thousands of objects that have become famous in their own right, i.e, the sold gold mummy mask that is so iconic. Wilkinson certainly talks about the kingly possessions found in the tomb, but the real focus of the book is what can be learned about the culture and day-to-day lives of ancient Egyptians exemplified by 100 objects interred with the King that would be familiar to and used by all levels of society in Egypt 3,000+ years ago. An Informative and enjoyable read.Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s intact tomb yielded thousands of objects that have become famous in their own right, i.e, the sold gold mummy mask that is so iconic. The author takes the reader on a physical and historical journey down river from Aswan where the river first becomes navigable on the upper Nile, all the way to the delta where the current capital of Egypt, Cairo, is located. We visit cities and villages and the temples, tombs and archeological sites associated with them while learning more about the dynasties of Egypt. I confess that it will take more exposure to begin to keep the pharaohs straight in my mind, but this was an excellent introduction to the places they created that we can still visit 4,000 years later. The author takes the reader on a physical and historical journey down river from Aswan where the river first becomes navigable on the upper Nile, all the way to the delta where the current capital of Egypt, Cairo, is located. A World War II Home Front Novel set in America. Each chapter is from the point of view of one of four women living in a small New England costal town chaffing under blackout regulations. Researched and written by the niece of Helene, one of nine women who escaped a death march from Ravensbruck Concentration Camp in 1945 and walked across Germany to the front lines and American forces to save themselves. Each of the women was arrested for Resistance activities in France before being captured, often running networks or acting as curriers. They survived the concentration camp, saved themselves, and then disappeared back into regular life. In many cases, their own families, friends and children were unaware of their sacrifices and heroism. The story of their escape and walk to freedom consumes the first ⅔ of the book. The last part tells of the women’s return to their homes, attempts at reintegration to normal life, family, and how their experiences affected their own and their children’s lives. Not an easy book to read, but important especially as so few survivors remain to share their first-hand accounts.Researched and written by the niece of Helene, one of nine women who escaped a death march from Ravensbruck Concentration Camp in 1945 and walked across Germany to the front lines and American forces to save themselves. I couldn't put it down. It can be enjoyed as a straight-up science fiction first contact story, but if you've read lots of this genre, you'll see many nods and winks to authors, novels, and movies starting with the names of the two cryoships: the SS Delany and the SS Leguin 50. Or enjoy it for the ripped from the news satire of the political, social, and climate issues facing us today. And of course it's terrifyingly amusing.I couldn't put it down. Yes, this book is about David Chang’s meteoric rise as a chef and restaurateur, but it’s also about his difficult childhood, his persistent depression, and his close examination of the often toxic atmosphere present in a high end restaurant kitchen. A good introduction if you, like me, have friends or family who want to enjoy the festivities but not the intoxicants. The recipes are pretty tasty, but even more, I appreciated the introduction to the non-alcoholic bases like verjus and seedlip.

A selection of mostly humorous essays about, well, getting old. Ephron was 69 when she published this and very definitely looking more backward than forward in her life. Given the length and breadth of her career and her breezy name dropping, this makes for some interesting and funny reading. The book is not deep on introspection, nor do I think it was intended to be. It’s a nice, gentle poke at the annoyances of aging with some major league name-dropping from the worlds of entertainment and literature.A selection of mostly humorous essays about, well, getting old. I watched the video series Ken Burns The National Parks: America's Best Idea and thought at the time it was a cool, but unattainable goal to visit every one of them. Connor Knighton set out to do just that, in the space of just one year. He begins January 1st at Acadia, the first place in the continental U.S. to see the sunrise, and ends at Point Reyes on December 31st, the last in North America to see the sunset. The book is organized thematically rather than alphabetically or chronologically and includes lots of interesting backstory, musing, and discussion about the future of the parks as well as their past and present. If you are familiar with the story of The Monument Men, you know that the Nazis confiscated and outright stole many, many pieces of fine art from occupied France. This is the story of how courageous curators and guards kept that from happening to the treasures of the Louvre. Except for a few pieces too heavy or fragile to move, the entire contents of the Louvre were emptied out and transported to several hiding places in country castles and manors where they were protected. On the cover, this book says “The book that answers the questions you hoped you’d never have to ask.” I found that to be a true statement. I used this book as a reference and a support both for my mother as she aged and for myself. It helped me to think ahead and plan not only what to be ready for and to do, but how to approach conversations and decision making in a respectful manner that allowed my mother to remain in control of the decisions as much as possible. It also allowed us to talk about and plan for increasing supports when they were still for “some day” and not in the midst of an emergency, or when I had to make decisions on my own hoping it would be what my mother would have approved. The sooner you read this book, the more prepared and less fraught the process will be.On the cover, this book says “The book that answers the questions you hoped you’d never have to ask.” I found that to be a true statement.
